GOM Media Player for Windows handles most of the more common video formats, including MP4, AVI, MKV, and more. It comes with a sleeker, more media center-focused design and packs plenty of codecs under the hood to play just about any media format you throw at it.
The initial installation is standard, like any other Windows product: accept a couple terms, set a destination folder, and choose to opt in or out of an offer from AVG. After installation completes, GOM will guide you through an optional setup process to optimize initial use based on sound and monitor setup.
You'll be introduced to a 4:3 ratio default window with an orange, black, and silver theme that will make you wonder if Halloween came early. Your token playback tools like Play, Stop, and Skip Forward and Back are located on the bottom left corner, and control panels for managing your media content are located on the opposite side. In the middle is a small, integrated upsell ticker that links users to any of GOM's other products or video content. Though this can easily be removed by switching to another skin, it's far less intrusive than other attempts at product promotions that we've seen in many other apps.
Right above is a timeline that's extremely narrow; this is fine for standard keyboard/mouse users but hardly ideal for touch. Right-clicking anywhere on the player will expose even more detailed options and audio/video-related tweaks like those found in other open-source players. You can add custom audio EQ effects, tweak subtitle lengths, and even take burst screenshots to capture particular moments from videos. However, some of the language was a bit confusing: GOM labels screen rotation as "flip input/output." Not a deal- breaker by any means, but not a labor-intensive fix either.
Power users are given the added option to set custom hot keys and even sync their remote iOS and Android devices like tablets and phones to control the media player over Wi-Fi. And though this feature works for the most part, buggy playback and less-than-stellar navigation do not make this prime time-ready.
But when it came to video playback, GOM was no slouch. Videos played and looked as they should, and it was easy enough to incrementally tweak your picture settings during live play.
Whether you choose this or VLC, both are solid media players, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. GOM tries to do a lot, and though some of those attempts could use some work, its core mode is rock solid: watching your favorite Global Starcraft II League (GSL) masters duke it out in this season of GSL.

The free version has a few buttons and options faded out, but a lot can be done with just the free version. We would recommend this to the novice user and more advanced user alike.

RealPlayer 16 maintains its redesign from version 15 but changes a couple things under the hood, most notably the original "Featured" video section.
Installation process remains the same: Real uses a stub installer with optional offers of various products that you can choose to add or ignore. The sleek, metallic-colored interface from last year remains intact; the core video player, media library manager, and built-in burning tools remain virtually unchanged. The most noticeable overhaul exists in RealPlayer's new Web Videos tab.
Last year's features like private mode and the ability to view Facebook videos from within the interface still exist, but now reside in a grander direction toward content discovery. RealPlayer has greatly improved the use flow for finding new videos on the Web by aggregating some of the most popular content, enabling users to view them all from within the Real Player interface. The left column organizes video channels, beginning with the most preferential focuses (like bookmarked and Facebook videos), followed by a list of general categories similar to those found on aggregated video portals.
You can download videos directly from within the interface, a common but always useful feature for video players. RealPlayer 16 also comes with updated device profiles for the latest gadgets, including iPad 4 and Samsung Tabs. This means that you can download and convert videos into the most compatible formats, which RealPlayer will remember for future videos as well. Your downloaded content automatically gets collected into a Downloads & Recordings folder for easy viewing and recollection.
The video burning feature remains, but felt a bit lacking; RealPlayer lets users burn audio and video discs like VCDs and DVDs, but direct burning to Blu-ray support is still missing, despite the technology having been out for over half a decade. If Real wants to stand as a major presence as a premium media station, then limiting users to just burn AVCHD on smaller mediums instead of full Blu-ray format just won't cut it. Note that AVCHD content can still be played on Blu-ray players.
There's still plenty to love in RealPlayer, especially with the improved support for Web content; it's come a long way since the simple browser additions and RealPlayer has been slowly fine-tuning its design for a better user experience with minimal bloat as a free product. As a free product update, we highly recommend it.

JetAudio (sometimes stylized as “jetAudio”) is a shareware media player program for Microsoft Windows and Android which offers advanced playback options for a wide range of multimedia file formats.

Initially released in 1997,JetAudio is one of the oldest extant media players for the Windows platform.
Apart from music and video playback, JetAudio offers functions such as metadata editing, CD ripping and burning, data conversion, sound recording and Internet radio broadcasting. It also includes numerous sound effects. The commercial “Plus VX” version of the program includes unlocked BBE sound enhancement algorithms and a wider file format support, as well as the ability to transcode more than 30 seconds of video files.
A copy of JetAudio is supplied on a mini CD with every MP3 player produced by Cowon, the Korean consumer electronics manufacturer responsible for the development of the program.

Lyric support:
JetAudio has the ability to display both synchronized and unsynchronized lyrics to the music using several different methods. Lyrics are displayed in the dedicated Lyrics Viewer window (accessible by pressing the “Show Lyric” button above the timer module in the Main Window), along with the album art of the file and optionally a spectrum visualization (accessible by clicking the menu button in the top left corner, selecting “Sound/Visualization” and then “Internal Spectrum Viewer ON/OFF”).
Below are listed the different methods to display lyrics in JetAudio 8.0.17:
  • Look up the lyrics in the Leo’s Lyrics or CIX Lyrics databases:
Press the “Load Lyric Files” button at the bottom of the Lyrics Window and select either “Search Lyric from CIX Lyrics” or “Search Lyric from Leo’s LDB”. If a match is found in the database, the lyrics will be downloaded and displayed in the Lyrics Viewer.
It is a known error that JetAudio is unable to connect to Leo’s Lyrics database to download lyrics. As of version 8.0.17, this problem has yet to be solved.
  • Place a text file in the same directory as the music file:
The simplest alternative is to place a text file (*.txt) containing the lyrics in the same directory as the song. The text file needs to have exactly the same file name as the song. The lyrics will then be displayed in the Lyrics Viewer when the song is played.
  • Place a lyric file in the same directory as the music file:
This will yield lyrics that are synchronized to the music, as most lyric files contain timecodes in addition to the lyric text.
  • Add a lyric tag to the music file:
To add a lyric tag to your music file, press F4 to open the Tag Editor and select the “Lyrics” tab. In the Media Center, the Tag Editor is accessible by righhttp://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=4861644515568366770#editor/target=post;postID=829942565120650313t-clicking a track, selecting “Edit” and then “Edit Tag”.
JetAudio uses Cowon’s proprietary lyric tag format rather than the standard Lyrics3v2. As such, files tagged with the Lyrics3 format are not compatible with the lyric viewing function of JetAudio, and conversely, applications supporting Lyrics3 tags will not be able to display lyrics for files tagged with JetAudio.
  • Use Lyric Maker or iAUDIO LDB Manager to write lyric data to your files:
Use the “Lyric Maker” utility that comes bundled with JetAudio to write timecoded lyric data to your files. Alternatively, you can use the iAUDIO LDB Manager application intended for use with Cowon’s portable media players.

Plugins:
JetAudio supports most Winamp plug-ins.

Other features:
JetAudio offers several unique features such as bookmarking the current position in a song, looping a section of a song, a dropdown on-screen display with configurable content (much like the one found in AIMP3) and a configurable “sleep timer” for shutting down the computer after a set period of playback (among other options).

QuickTime is an extensible multimedia framework developed by Apple Inc., capable of handling various formats of digital video, picture, sound, panoramic images, and interactivity.

The classic version of QuickTime is available for Windows XP and later, as well as Mac OS X Leopard and later operating systems. A more recent version, QuickTime X, is currently available on Mac OS X Snow Leopard, Lion, and Mountain Lion.

QuickTime is bundled with Mac OS X. QuickTime for Microsoft Windows has always been downloadable as a standalone installation, as well as being bundled with Apple's iTunes.
Software development kits (SDKs) for QuickTime are available to the public with an Apple Developer Connection (ADC) subscription.

For example, iTunes can export audio in WAV, AIFF, MP3, AAC, and Apple Lossless. QuickTime Pro:
QuickTime Player 7 is limited to only basic playback operations unless a QuickTime Pro license key is purchased from Apple. Apple's professional applications (e.g. Final Cut Studio, Logic Studio) include a QuickTime Pro license. Pro keys are specific to the major version of QuickTime for which they are purchased and unlock additional features of the QuickTime Player application on Mac OS X or Windows.Also, the Pro key does not entail any additional downloads.
Features enabled by the Pro license include, but are not limited to:
  • Editing clips through the cut, copy and paste functions, merging separate audio and video tracks, and freely placing the video tracks on a virtual canvas with the options of cropping and rotation.
  • Saving and exporting (encoding) to any of the codecs supported by QuickTime. QuickTime 7 includes presets for exporting video to a video-capable iPod, Apple TV, and the iPhone.
  • Saving existing QuickTime movies from the web directly to a hard disk drive. This is often, but not always, either hidden or intentionally blocked in the standard mode. It should be noted that two options exist for saving movies from a web browser:
    • Save as source – This option will save the embedded video in its original format. (i.e., not limited to *.mov files.)
    • Save as QuickTime movie – This option will save the embedded video in a *.mov file format no matter what the original container is/was.
Mac OS X Snow Leopard includes QuickTime X. QuickTime Player X lacks cut, copy and paste and will only export to four formats, but its limited export feature is free. Users do not have an option to upgrade to a pro version of QuickTime X, but those who have already purchased QuickTime 7 Pro and are upgrading to Snow Leopard from a previous version of Mac OS X will have QuickTime 7 stored in the Utilities or user defined folder. Otherwise, users will have to install QuickTime 7 from the "Optional Installs" directory of the Snow Leopard DVD after installing the OS.
Mac OS X Lion and OS X Mountain Lion also include QuickTime X. No installer for QuickTime 7 is included with these software packages, but users can download the QuickTime 7 installer from the Apple support site.

QuickTime framework:
The QuickTime framework provides the following:
  • Encoding and transcoding video and audio from one format to another.
  • Decoding video and audio, then sending the decoded stream to the graphics or audio subsystem for playback. In Mac OS X, QuickTime sends video playback to the Quartz Extreme (OpenGL) Compositor.
  • A "component" plug-in architecture for supporting additional 3rd-party codecs (such as DivX).
As of early 2008, the framework hides many older codecs listed below from the user although the option to "Show legacy encoders" exists in QuickTime Preferences to use them. The framework supports the following file types and codecs natively.

File Format:
The native file format for QuickTime video, QuickTime File Format, specifies a multimedia container file that contains one or more tracks, each of which stores a particular type of data: audio, video, effects, or text (e.g. for subtitles). Each track either contains a digitally encoded media stream (using a specific format) or a data reference to the media stream located in another file. The ability to contain abstract data references for the media data, and the separation of the media data from the media offsets and the track edit lists means that QuickTime is particularly suited for editing, as it is capable of importing and editing in place (without data copying).
Other file formats that QuickTime supports natively (to varying degrees) include AIFF, WAV, DV-DIF, MP3, and MPEG program stream. With additional QuickTime Components, it can also support ASF, DivX Media Format, Flash Video, Matroska, Ogg, and many others.

Profile support:
QuickTime 6 added limited support for MPEG-4; specifically encoding and decoding using Simple Profile (SP). Advanced Simple Profile (ASP) features, like B-frames, were unsupported (in contrast with, for example, encoders such as XviD or 3ivx). QuickTime 7 supports the H.264 encoder and decoder.
